So i made a few more mistakes. I rang around to see if
anyone in Melbourne would give me a Japan rail pass but since it was the weekend
the train station was closed. Isn't it weird that to get a rail pass for Japan,
you have to get a train station from a different country to send you a ticket
that you cant even use in Japan until you go to a train station in Japan and
swap it for a train ticket?!?!?.
Anyways to fix that problem i have decided night
busing is the way for me. There is a special bus pass for tourists that covers
3 non-sequential days of travel throughout Japan for only 10,000 yen (around
$120NZ). Using it will get me from Tokyo to Hiroshima, Hiroshima to Osaka and Osaka back to Tokyo (with a few day buses
to other cities as well) for around 1/3rd the price as a 7 day rail pass or 1/5th
the price of a 14 day rail pass (which i was planning to buy) so score for me hopefully.
In fact if i just decided to only use the rail without having a Japan rail pass it would have cost close to $1000NZD so lucky that bus pass exists for the people that just cant book anything in advance.

Second mistake was not pre-booking a hostel months ago for
Tokyo. Now this one wasn't as big as the rail pass, but still pretty silly not
thinking hostels book out way in advance (damn you internet!).
The only hostels left in Tokyo were (in the words of
Hostelbookers/Hostelworld) dirty, smelly, damp and cold...apart from one which
was awesome!. its supposed to be brand new and the last 3 reviews were all high
90's, that even rivals the Khaosan Hostels that look amazing but are booked out
for months.
Finally i was having a massive dilemma about what i was
going to do my first night in Tokyo as my flight comes in at around 10.30pm
tonight and i wasn't sure if i should get a capsule hotel for the night or find
my way into Tokyo city and walk around the city all night/morning and get a
feel for the city.
I picked the capsule hotel since i thought staying up all night on my first day in Japan was going to be a mistake. Lucky i did!, i forgot AirAsia never fly's on time. Japan has a weird rule that public transport stops at midnight so i feel i picked the right choice as i would have been in trouble if the flight was an hour late and i was stuck in the airport twiddling my thumbs with now way to get there...
